Our school puts a premium on creating a classroom community. All children are encouraged to treat their mentors, families, teachers, and peers with kindness, compassion, and above all respect. A respect for others thoughts, opinions, personal space, and ultimately oneself. We teach this by first respecting the students themselves.
Our first priority is safety and our second is making sure children love the school. These are the first steps to ensuring inner peace. The more a child has inner peace, the easier it is for him or her to absorb and acquire knowledge. It's important for children to feel safe and cared about in their educational environment.
There is more to education than merely academics. Character development is essential. In addition to the education provided in our school, we teach children important life skills such as conflict resolution, social interactions, and independence. Combining all of these aspects allow your children's self-confidence to blossom both in and out of the classroom.
On my first visit to a Montessori school I remember hearing a little hand bell ring.
All the children went and sat silently in a circle. After greeting everyone, the teacher announced that she had prepared new work for them. She asked a child to bring her a work rug which the child, so excited to be chosen, brought over. With great care it was unrolled and smoothed out before her. The teacher placed a large tray on the rug full of jars, brushes, and things. She then presented a child's little leather shoe, and told the children that they were going to learn how to polish a shoe. Very slowly, with great concentration she proceeded with a long presentation on how to polish this little shoe. I myself, was mesmerized , and a little disappointed when I wasn't chosen to polish the next one. The teacher barely said a word but I could remember every step because of her skill in presenting this work.
I was so taken by this experience that within days I had enrolled in the Montessori Institute in Boston and finagled my way into an internship with that little school.
Now, more than 35 years later, I am proud and blessed to still be providing children and their parents the experience of a Montessori education.
Here at The Milford Montessori we provide children with an educational experience rich in life skills, the arts, mindfulness and academic excellence. The school, like the community it serves, is rich in history and a sense of fellowship. I chose the Montessori theories of teaching because it honors every part of a child’s natural curiosity & their world of play.
If you'd like to introduce your child to an exciting, unique learning environment that focuses on an intuitive sense of learning and exploration while encouraging a deep love for comminuty, then we invite you to visit The Milford Montessori.
I look forward to meeting you!
